The IP Podcast

The IP Podcast is the first oral-history podcast dedicated to the unsung engineers, sysadmins, product managers, and operators who built the Internet in the 1990s — first-person accounts from the people who did the hands-on work, not the names everyone already knows.

The era matters because the 1990s is when the Internet moved from a research and academic network into the homes and businesses of the general public. That transition was not inevitable and it was not clean. It depended on thousands of people doing unglamorous, technical, often improvised work — leasing T1s from incumbent telcos, standing up modem banks in closets and basements, keeping NOCs running on skeleton crews, and arguing with vendors who did not yet understand what their customers needed. The web companies and the apps got the attention. The infrastructure layer — the people who actually put the net into people's houses — got almost none.

These stories are undertold because the people who did the work were rarely the ones writing the books or giving the conference keynotes. They were working. The regional ISP that folded in 1998 has the same claim to a story as the one that went public, but its founders were never asked. The sysadmin who kept the NOC alive at 3 a.m. has the same claim as the executive who raised the VC round, but nobody recorded their account. The IP Podcast exists to record those accounts — in the words of the people who were there.

This is a closing-window project. The people who built the 90s Internet are aging, and some are already gone. Their untold stories will be lost if not recorded now. That is not a marketing claim — it is the operational reality of the show. The IP Podcast records these stories while they can still be told by the people who lived them.
